July 1st 2005

So, it's been roughly a week since I got back from the summit, and I've still not written a journal. I've had pretty decent reasons but it's still pretty inexcusable. :)

I'm not going to write an extremely detailed account (diny's memory is intimidating) of the summit, mostly because I can't remember everything that happened, and also because everyone else has.

What I will do I say thanks to everyone I met and spent time with at the summit for making the entire week (yes, i stayed a week, you quitters) the most fun, and most memorable time i've had. I didn't meet a single person I didn't think was awesome - the atmosphere, the injokes, the semi-drunken chaos...it was all great.

I made true friends during my time in LA, and went away with memories i'll never forget. Sounds cliché as hell, but it's true. The furama crew were quite clearly the most awesome people who showed up, and i'm already missing you fine folks.

notable moments, in the order i remember them:

  • running from terminal 4 to terminal 3 with bornghost so we can hopefully catch attila as he picks up his baggage and surprise him with a giant sign.
  • in a similar vein, embarrassing damphyr with another giant sign in the airport, and watching an airport official ride in a wheelchair down the exit corridor, then hop out when he realised 10 people were chuckling at him.
  • This. I'd say 'enough said', but what that photo lacks is the guy walking past the door, who saw what was happening in the photo and did a total double-take, to the point that he walked past, realised what he'd seen and walked BACK to give us the best example of 'wtf?' i've ever seen.
  • amolerouth and damphyr are hot dancers. :eyes:
  • meeting precurser, one of my inspirations to enter the world of digital graphics online. EndEffect was one of my regular haunts.
  • Dramarama. :blushes:
  • losing my luggage at LAX when i touch down. :( thankfully it arrived at the hotel the next day.
  • pachunka and spyed's 'force five', and pach's 'history of deviantART á la Star Wars.
  • sitting on the beanbags with a bunch of cool folks, wondering if we can manipulate deviants into fetching us freebies from around the summit by offering to make them senior members.
  • and of course, CANADIAN BACOOOOOOON. :D the stupidest, most hilarious joke ever.

It was funny. I ended up talking more to people I've never spoken to before, rather than the people I knew somewhat through IRC and the site.
  • damphyr - is a truly awesome person. thanks for the memories, and you definately have to come visit some time. plus, i have your caridgan/fleece thing! =p
  • bornghost - you're one of the coolest, most laid-back guys I know. and you have awesome taste in music. remind me to pick up some recommendations from you in future. :>
  • phae - thanks for sticking around when i was panicking about my lost luggage, and for the fun us stragglers had on the last couple of days. :>
  • knock - was good to be able to spend some time with you guys before you move away from portsmouth. i'm going to really miss you guys. :< expect visits when i have a job. :)
  • anon-y-mouse - i had a great time with you, and i'll never forget it. :) It was awesome to meet you.
  • ninjabrick - oh ninjaplick, we must truly elope! the oceans between us tear at my heartstrings, and i fear i cannot go on!
  • dinyctis - was good to finally meet you, man. Was just reading the quote list - half of it's you and it's all hilarious. :>
  • godofodd - is a funky guy. Thanks for the book recommendations; they'll keep my going for a while. Shame you had to leave so soon.
  • Zeros-Elipticus - has an awkward name, but is a generous mac-lender. thanks for letting me get my IRC fix.
  • CyniSteve - sorry for calling you the noob. but you're like...not even a subscriber, right? ;) Also, you're a crazy poker.
  • splat - is just as cool in person as he is on site, if not cooler. and is an excellent driver - thanks for the lifts. :)
  • picard102 - still hasn't demonstrated the legendary 'canadian smackdown'. It was great to meet you first in the hotel lobby, too. :)
  • amolerouth - is craaaaazy. but fun! i was unexpectedly spagacked more than once! :x

It's nice to see all the people who didn't come this time saying they'll come to the next one, now. But you guys should have come to this one and been a part of dA history. :) The people whom I most would have liked to have met were Matt and John. Please, guys, try to make it to the next one. And if YOU didn't come, you should come next time too. :)

theflat is the account the furama crew started once we got back. it probably won't make much sense to anyone else. but you gotta admit, it's got a cool avatar. :>

In other news, since I've gotten back, my harddrive was caught in a power surge during a thunderstorm and died. I lost about 4 years of unfinished graphics and artwork, my enormous collection of winamp skins dating from about 1999. On the plus side, I didn't lose my music, or my photographs. Still, time to burn some things to DVD i think. :blushes:

Check out some of the cool summit photocollages:

April 24st 2005

To reiterate: I have crappy, WoW-addicted friends. :x :x :x Anyone fancy coming drinking in Porsmouth RIGHT NOW?

April 21st 2005

Well, it's been a while since my last journal entry and things have changed quite a bit. Not much for the better, either.

I am somewhat behind with Uni work and deadlines are looming; my group and I are really going to have to get our skates on to meet them.

I am trying to organise a meet in Portsmouth (the city I live in on the south coast of the UK); You can see the list of interested people here and if you're interested in coming, you can help suggest activities here.

I'm also definately going to the Summit now, and have booked my flights. Going out on the 15th, returning on the 22nd. I'm going to be sharing a hotel room with dinyctis and voodoo-prophet, and phae and knock are going to be staying there too, in a different room. Late-night staff shenanigans ensue! Also, i hear cei- and Age2003 may be coming if they can find accommodation - if you live in LA, and wouldn't mind putting up a suave and charming Brit, let them know. :)

The vast majority of my IRl friends are now addicted to World of Warcraft. This means I have next to no-one to go out with, and am reduced to sitting here wondering what to do. To this end i recently attempted to take up Origami using a huge amount of net-based resources and some printer paper. Feeling somewhat masochistic, I decided to jump in at the deep end and make an Acrocanthosaurus.

However, after persevering until 4am and continuing this evening, I'm stuck at step 42. If anyone can offer any help, i'd be much obliged. ;) I also started on a dragonfly, but got stuck on that too. :( I did make a nifty crane though. :/

I've been hanging out in dAmn quite a bit lately, and I've changed my opinion - it's not all bad. :) There are some genuinely nice people on there, and some decent channels have sprung up around them. I've mostly been in #pixelart, #Whores, #dauk, #music, and #dapensioners. Check them out!

Oh yeah. I'm not a Gallery Director again. My role hasn't changed. I am still the Assistant Director of Contests - there has just been a mixup with a couple of symbols. Astrophel has the same problem. :(

If you know me well, you'll know there have been some other changes recently, but I don't want to go into them in public.

January 9th 2005

I've started new AIM/MSN accounts to get rid of the 5 year old, 500-strong contact list i have somehow managed to acquire. full of people i don't speak to anymore, or don't want to speak to.

so i'm starting afresh - could people please note me with their IM details so i can give you the new addresses. :)

I'm adding a lot of people myself, but i'm bound to miss some accidentally.

January 12th 2005

Please, everyone head on over and congratulate knock and cyberyt on their recent senior memberships!

:w00t:

they really deserve it. :D

Alias Systems, creators of products such as Maya and Sketchbook Pro, is holding a contest to design a character for an upcoming game to be produced by games developer A2M. While all the relevant details are included on their flash site, here's some of the information to get you interested:

Prizes

Prizes will be awarded to the ten finalists (the top ten highest-ranking entries in terms of votes) and one grand prize-winner who will be chosen from amongst the finalists by an A2M representative.
  • 10 Finalists will receive a Wacom 3 Intuos Digital Tablet, the full version of Alias Sketchbook Pro, and an A2M game title.
  • 1 Grand Prize Winner will receive all of the above, plus $5000 cash, and a Motion M1400 Tablet PC. Your creation will also be featured in an upcoming game by A2M.
Some amazing prizes there, in anyone's book!

Guidelines

The contest website contains the full, exhaustive list of rules, but keep these guidelines in mind when creating your character:
  • Character clothing, hairstyle, attitude, etc. must fit the breakdancing style, commonly referred to as "BBoying" - either old school (circa mid-1980's - refer to Run DMC, Beastie Boys, etc.) or new school (current + late-1990's).
  • Character design can be of either male or female gender.
  • Character design must not display/include moving parts/accessories such as chains, long ponytails, belts, etc. as they may not be supported by game mechanics.
  • Participants are encouraged to propose the names of their characters.
  • Participants are encouraged to design characters from a varied ethnic background.

Entering the Contest

Again, it is incredibly important for people to read the full text of the rules on the Alias site - they are far too detailed to be listed here.

The contest opened on the 3rd of December and closes at the end of Janurary 31st, 2005. Multiple entries are allowed per entrant, but only one per email address. Entries can be submitted in either TIFF or JPEG format. All entries must be created using Alias Sketchbook Pro, a trial version of which can be downloaded here.

The site also contains an FAQ which should answer any additional questions.
